Light Of Wisdom

Light Of Wisdom

Hello, I’m your host Kristine and welcome to Woo Myung Cast, where you can listen to Great Teacher Woo Myung’s words of wisdom.

Today’s story is called Light of Wisdom.

A little beam of light filters into the lightless dark room.

In a dark, pitch-black room, a feeling of space starts to appear.

Silhouettes are visible.

The more the light filters in,

More things start to appear gradually–the structures in the room, desks, chairs and vases.

As the light exists in the room, you ‘get to know’ that the black chunks were desks, chairs and vases.

Likewise, the light is like wisdom to us. As the state of ‘knowing nothing’ is usually expressed as ‘being dark,’ we can see the truth with the light.

Without the light, we cannot see the world. There is a saying that we should exist like light and salt in the world; light and salt are two essential things in the world, so we should become that which the world needs.

Also, the origin of the name Lucy is ‘light’ and thus means ‘a person who brings hope and wisdom.’ This implies that light and wisdom were the same meaning from a long time ago.

The true wisdom would be to know the truth. ‘Knowledge’ and ‘wisdom’ clearly have different meanings, there would be a difference of land and sky between one who copies knowledge of the world from books and keeps it in his head and one who ‘just’ knows principles of the world. The true wisdom exists in our mind from the beginning. However, it has been concealed with unnecessary, lifeless knowledge and false minds, and so the light could not be illuminated. One who knows the light, true wisdom, in his mind, illuminates the light and keeps the light bright, must be the one like light and salt of the world.

And that light will illuminate the world forever.

This is a poem by teacher Woo Myung and it is called Light part II.

Light II

If there were no light in this world,

heaven and earth would be out of sight.

If there were clouds in this world,

heaven and earth would be out of sight.

If there were fog in this world,

heaven and earth would be out of sight.

If there were a sandstorm in this world,

heaven and earth would be out of sight.

If there are clouds in one’s mind,

he is unable to see Heaven and earth

for they would be out of sight.

If there is fog in one’s mind,

he is unable to see Heaven and earth,

for they are out of sight.

If there is a sandstorm in one’s mind,

he is unable to see Heaven and earth,

for they are out of sight.

If there is no Light in one’s mind,

he is unable to see Heaven and earth

and therefore does not know the logic of Heaven and earth.

If in this world there were only light,

without cloulds, fog, or sandstorms,

this world would be bright and easy to see.

Likewise, if there were

no clouds, fog, or sandstorms in one’s mind –

the Light appears therein, and thus he would

know the logic of the world,

know both the living and the dead,

and live eternally as that Light.
